Motion: Speed–Time Graphs (Interpreting Phases)
Worth 2 Marks • Foundation Level
Fig. 1.1 shows the speed–time graph for a car.
Match each letter, R, S and T, with the correct description of motion:
•R is during the initial phase where speed increases from 0 to 18 m/s in 4.0 s.
•S is during the horizontal flat phase from 4.0 s to 16.0 s at 18 m/s.
•T is during the downward sloping phase from 16.0 s to 20.0 s where speed drops to 0.
Which row correctly identifies the motion at points S and T?
Formula Guide:
On a speed–time graph:
•A horizontal flat line (gradient = 0) represents motion with constant speed (S).
•A downward sloping line (negative gradient) represents deceleration / negative acceleration (T).
•An upward sloping line represents acceleration (R).
